Lib Dem Leadership Battle
I haven't actually mentioned this yet, so I thought I'd start with a very interesting article that I missed when it came out the Monday before last.
Liberal Democrat leadership frontrunner Simon Hughes has denied suggestions that he is gay.

The party president and new bookmakers' favourite for the role was asked in an interview in the Independent newspaper on Monday whether rumours surrounding his sexuality were true.

He dismissed the claims, but suggested that the country is ready for a gay party leader or premier.

"No, I'm not," he said. "But it absolutely should not matter if I was.

"If I was, and if people were to judge me on that, I would ask them to think again.

"There is no reason why you shouldn't have a gay leader of a party, or even a gay prime minister. I don't think this is an issue."

Hughes has faced the rumours since he won his North Southwark and Bermondsey seat in a bitter by-election campaign in 1983.

The 54-year-old is still single. He said he had thought about getting married "often", but that MPs were entitled to a private life.

Well I say, good! That's all that put to bed then. We've had enough sodding flak recently over the whole Kennedy and Oaten affairs, and I think this soft of definitive, no bullshit, straight-talking statement is exactly the sort of thing we need right now. Well done Simon!

Okay, that's last week's news sorted out, let's start reading through this week's news.

Re: hehe

I'd suggest everyone avoid that.

I've sent in a complaint to the Press Complaints Commission about three aspects of it.

Re: hehe

Agreed!

'Twas a joke - I'm not a Sun reader. So I didn't actually read the article...

Oh ho ho. There's no inconsistency - they asked him if he was gay, and he's not. He's bisexual.

He has said the response was true, but misleading.

It's not exactly been a secret - I've known for over 20 years.

Misleading, a little stupid, but, well, who cares? Tatchell says he knew at the time of Bermondsey and thinks Hughes has been a good MP since.

Stupid small minded mainstream journalists. Let us know how the PCC thing goes?

Just read your post and with the knowledge of todays news it's quite ironic.

Mind you at no point did Simon actually lie. He's not gay. He's just bisexual.

Shouldn't make a bit of difference but given the way he came to Parliament and some peoples tendency to be overly pedantic on sexual issues you can bet it'll be in the press for a bit.

That is rather the effect I was hoping... :)
