[Northern Accent]Eee... It's Not Bad[/Northern Accent]
Sorry, couldn't resist that one...

Anyhow, after I posted about my desire to get a MacBook Air, it was suggested that I got for an Asus Eee instead (an ultra small and very cheap laptop running a version of Linux).

I countered that I thought the keyboard would be too small for me - I need to touchtype on a train, so I want a full-sized keyboard. But I did say I'd check it out, and as General Tangent's just bought one, I got a chance to try it out before last night's game.

And the verdict is that it's a seriously impressive piece of kit, and if you want something very small for browsing the web, doing emails, and the occasional bit of typing I think I'd strongly recommend it. But the keyboard just wasn't quite what I'm looking for, and it apparently uses a lot of power in hibernation mode (something which is an issue for me, because with the Mac I just stop typing and close the lid - and then when I open it again, I'm right back where I was).

But if you're not looking for something you can write a full-length novel with whilst on a train, I'd strongly recommend you check it out.

Looks pretty, and well worth considering as a 2nd laptop. :)

I don't need a full-sized keyboard for writing, personally. I wrote most of my 40,000 words of the Skull & Bones RPG on my Psion Revo (200g, a bit bigger than a Nokia Communicator, but thinner) on trains & tubes.

Coda: (suggestion)

My suggested addition?

- If you happen to not like this particular keyboard form factor, and can't wait the 10 seconds it takes to boot up.

Everyone I know uses it to write whilst travelling by train ::shrug::. Different strokes for Different Folks I guess.

Re: Coda: (suggestion)

Okay, I guess that's a more strictly accurate/less personal way, although I wasn't meaning my summary in a critical way.

All I can say is that I tried typing on it, and I kept on hitting keys adjacent to the ones I wanted to hit. If other people can do 80wpm on it, then that's great for them, but I couldn't. I could type on it, but I think I can type significantly faster, and with less interruption of thoughts, on a full-sized keyboard.

As to the ten seconds boot up, it's not just that, because you also have to then navigate to the directory where you left you're wp document, double-click on that, then wait for Open Office to start up. Granted, that won't take long, but it's still more of an interruption.

Okay fair point, BUT, as a published novelist who is well known within certain circles spcfically for that, if you say a tool is unfit for something, then a certain subset of people WILL (I'm sure) take your opnion / critic of it to heart.

That's the only reason I responded to the (perfectly fine personal opinion) about the eeepc as a writing tool :)

So. When are you going to get a macbook 'air? or are you going to wait until someone you kow goes states side in order to take advantage of the weak dollar :)

btw any news on when the novel isgoign to be back in print, a few people in a forum i'm on asked about it (it s a non rpg forum which had a random thread)...

Well I'm not sure people would take my word that much to heart. :)

But I did explain my reasoning, which is that it hasn't got a full-sized keyboard (which is true) and that I think this is necessary for bulk writing. Anyone who doesn't think so would therefore discount my opinion, whilst someone who does insist of a full-sized keyboard would agree with me.

i.e. I think I'd reasonably well separated my facts from opinions, even if I was guilty of stating my opinion as an assertion.

A US keyboard would annoy (hate the fact that the return key is in a different place) and whilst I guess you could perhaps have it changed, I like the idea of being able to take it back if it goes wrong.

No. Might try ringing them later today. It's very annoying.
