I obviously spend quite a lot of time thinking about how to market books, so it was very interesting to chat with my good friend [info]boxninja (a.k.a. Gregor Hutton) last weekend about his apparently rather stompingly good RPG 3:16 Carnage Amongst The Stars. In the three or four months since it's launched, it's sold shedloads - not because of advertising or heavy-duty marketing, but simply through the timeless method of being very, very good and thus generating a huge amount of positive word of mouth publicity.

Git.

If he wasn't such a good mate I'd be quite bitterly jealous. (As it is, I'm still jealous, but at least I'm not bitter about it). The really annoying thing is that I haven't managed to get round to playing 3:16 myself, since all the times it's been being demoed, I've been stuck behind a stall. But I think I can take the liberty of quoting [info]luciddestiny, who did get to play it at Dragonmeet:

"Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Just brilliant."

Who needs advertising with quotes like that, eh?

One of the things I've been trying to do with Game Night is stimulate on-line discussions about it - and this turns out to be pretty hard. Which is why, when I see someone who has managed to stimulate a lot of online discussion about their product, I can come to only one conclusion. It must be pretty damn good to have got people so excited.

Like the gorgeous looking 3:16 Carnage Amongst The Stars by my very good friend Gregor Hutton.

How much buzz? Well let's see how many threads on the main RPGNet rpg forum, since the start of August, had "3:16" in the title:

Other uses for 3:16
(Sell Me On, I Suppose) 3:16
Best place to acquire 3:16 print copy in the UK?
[3:16] What color is your MandelBrite armor?
[3:16] Impressions on first play
[3:16] Psionics
3:16
[3:16] Campaign rules!
[3:16] Just got the PDF
[3:16] Character Sheet wishlist

Ten threads over just forty days, only one of which was started by Gregor himself. It's a good job he's a mate of mine or I'd be bloody jealous!
