That the future (i.e. our present) has turned out to be rather boring and lacking in pulp is an oft-made point. But I got to thinking about what was the minimum change, at some point in the past, that would have, or could have, resulted in a Dan Dare space-opera present.
Is there one piece of handwavium that we could add that would result in Britannia ruling the space waves?
Jonny was stranded on Earth whilst still a fetus when his birth-parents' spaceship crashed, and has since worked hard - with only limited success - to integrate himself into human society.
He is currently employed as a computer programmer in the City of London, but moonlights as a writer on the side.
