I Need Your Help
There comes a time in a man's life when the events conspiring against him seem so insurmountable that his very life depends upon appealing for aid to his fellow men.

This isn't one of those times. I haven't been kidnapped by the Russian maffia, mutant radioactive sewer rats aren't attempting to colonise my house by way of the toilet, and I don't need your help in cashing a cheque smuggled out of a third world country by my father, the former minister of defence.

But I do need some help, and if you're someone who: a) has read Game Night; b) liked it; and c) has access to either a video camera, or a camera or phone that can take video - they you can help me.

I want to do a promotional video for Game Night. It will be very simple. Just an introduction by me followed by (hopefully) a bunch of people each holding up a copy of the book and saying - in a few words or sentences - how much, and perhaps why, they like the book. So I need you to film yourself saying that and then email the resulting file (MP4 would be fine) to me. I'll then stitch them all together. I think a montage of you guys will be way more powerful than anything I could say.

Quality doesn't matter. If the resulting film is a mixture of high-quality video camera footage and low-quality phone footage it will only increase its authenticity.

I've created a mock up of where I will use the video (with a test file shot by camera phone with the size hideously kludged) here:

http://www.jonnynexus.com/gamenight/index-ad.html

As you can see, the plan is to put it on the main Game Night page alongside the free preview (so the Amazon links don't get pushed down the page).

What does everyone think? Anyone up for it?

Needless to say, I would be very grateful for any clips that I receive.

I Have A Shiny New Quote!
From a review by ENWorld's Crothian:

"This is the best work of gaming fiction I have ever read."

Full review.

I'm rather chuffed!

What Do Philip Pullman, Jonny Nexus and Monica Ali Have In Common?
The answer is that they all have, or will have, had a book of theirs be the subject of [info]ianslife's monthly book club. They did Philip Pullman last month, they're doing Monica Ali's Brick Lane next month, and last night, they did me.

Philip Pullman, Jonny Nexus, Monica Ali. Not a bad sequence. And one that's worth repeating, if for no other reason than that it will make a pretty cool Google fragment if anyone other than me ever Googles my name. Philip Pullman, Jonny Nexus, Monica Ali. (Hello Mr Googlebot!)

They were nice and polite and only mentioned the bits about the book they did like. (I'm sure there were lots of things they didn't). They also asked lots of hard questions like: "How did you think up the idea of the [thing I won't mention as it's a minor spoiler]?" which produced from me a long, rambling and unhelpful reply which can basically be summarised as: "I don't know, I can't remember, I think I was in Greenwich at the time."

But it was fun, and [info]ianslife took some pictures which I'll hopefully be able to put up sometime.

In other news, I think Game Night might actually be back in print! (As I've explained in a comment on my previous post on the subject, when your book is print-on-demand, going out of print is a cockup rather than an achievement). At least, it appears to be available on both Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com, although only the cheaper than standard price version is currently available on .co.uk (but since that's the one that everyone buys, it's not really relevant).

The final bit of news is that I have my first target/deadline for the new novel, which I'm currently plotting. [info]ianslife's book club have kindly offered to make it their book of the month this time next year.

Game Night At Warpcon
Hi all,

Just a quick note to say that not only will we be at this year's Warpcon, we'll also have a stand in the trade hall selling copies of Game Night. They'll be available at a special convention rate of €9.99.

We'll also have some mugs, a t-shirt and a copy of the book for the auction on Saturday night.

But don't expect to see us Friday night, because we're flying in very late.

I Have Ink!
Just had my first success with a press release - a piece about me and Game Night in our local "non-free" newspaper, the Hounslow Chronicle. I wrote the press release around the angle of me working on the tube, and they took it, calling me up to get extra details, and then giving me a near half-page article illustrated by a picture of me standing outside Hounslow East tube station.

It's quite cool.

And yes, I am purchasing lots of copies. Friends and family will be informed.

I Have A Banner Ad!
Thanks to [info]jonhodgson, I now have a banner ad!

When more reviews come in, I'll do some further variations, but I think this is nice to be going with. It's up now on ENWorld, so hopefully that will get knowledge of the book to a few more people.

A Very Easy Way To Help Me
I'm currently trying to collate quotes about Game Night for my Reviews & Quotes page. The problem I have is that while I've got a lot of good feedback, I'm having got so much in a "soundbite" form, if you see what I mean.

So what would be really good would be if those of you've who've read the book (and hopefully enjoyed it!) could do a quick post on your blog with a nice neat quote I can put on my page (linking back to your blog post).

And then put a comment here with a link to let me know. (Or if you've already done so, and I've missed it, please comment here also).

Thanks!

Well Someone Must Be Buying It!
No-one's clicked on my Google ad today, and only one person bought via my Amazon.co.uk affiliate link yesterday, but this is what the book is showing on Amazon.co.uk, and while it's not that impressive, I'm pretty sure it's more than one - because the highest I've ever seen it was right when I launched, a few people bought it, and it got to 40 something thousand before falling to about 300,000. So someone somewhere must be buying it. (Either that, or no-one's buying books right now).
Amazon.co.uk Sales Rank: 8,633 in Books (See Bestsellers in Books)
Popular in this category:
#33 in Books > Humour > Fiction
33rd? Not that impressive, but then again, given how many discworld books Terry Pratchett's written, that might just make me the most popular non-Discworld humour author on Amazon right now! (Yes, I am joking, and I do realise that 33rd in a niche category isn't anything to write home about. Still, little acorns and all that.)

Next week I'll do the mailout to my mailing list (the one that was delayed due to server problems), and a little while after that I should be able to get banner advertising going on sites like ENWorld and RPGNet. Before then thought I'd love to get some more reviews up, in particular on Amazon.com and RPGNet, where I currently have none.

So if any of you have bought from Amazon and like the book I'd love it if you could put a review up there. And if any of you are RPGNet people I'd similarly appreciate a shout out there.

Thanks,

Jonny

P.S. If you do any reviews, can you use the following URL (which points people at both the book and the preview):

http://www.jonnynexus.com/gamenight/

(Note *with* the slash).

Thanks!

I Have Quotes!
Reviews seem to be like buses... you wait ages for one and then they all come piling in at once. I now have three reviews, one formal, two more forum comment types (but just as soothing for my ego!)

And from each one, I can make a really nice quote, which is pretty cool!
"A laugh riot... the writing is top-notch, the story is hilarious and the book is very reasonably priced."   [link]
Teflon Billy, ENWorld Staff Reviewer

"I loved the book. As usual, your sense of humor was spot on."   [link]
Herald, Critical Miss Forums

"I issued more laughs from reading Game Night than I do from an average Pratchett novel... Clash of The Titans meets Discworld, neatly blended with a little Red Dwarfism."   [link]
Sin, Critical Miss Forums
Also, I don't know if any of you guys who've read the book are on ENWorld, and were thinking of saying something about it there, but if you are, and you were, I think Teflon Billy's review thread would be the best place to do it.

Although I'm going to try to do the best I can to advertise and market Game Night, at the end of the day there's no message so powerful as word-of-mouth recommendations from those who've read a book. So if you read it and like it, please do let other people know.

(Of course, if you read it and don't like it, I'd appreciate it if you'd remember what your mother always taught you: "If you haven't got anything nice to say then don't say anything at all!")

:)

Few Game Night Related Things
Hi all,

Firstly, I'm currently on the lookout for mentions of Game Night (either good quotes, or reviews), either to put on my Reviews & Quotes page, or just plain damn because I like reading them. So if you find any mentions, can you let me know (either by commenting here, or sending an email to gamenight@jonnynexus.com).

Secondly, if you ever want to post a URL to the main Game Night page, could you use:

http://www.jonnynexus.com/gamenight/

and not:

http://www.jonnynexus.com/gamenight

The reason for the slash being currently required is that due to some weird server glitch that my hosting people are trying to track down, the latter URL (without the slash) bounces the user to a different port, which means that anyone behind a firewall can't see it. It's a bit annoying, and will hopefully soon be sorted.

Thirdly, if you're on my mailing list and wondering why I haven't yet sent out an email about Game Night, the reason is the above, plus a different issue that's currently affecting the mail server. I figure there's no point sending the mail out if half the people won't get it, and half of the people who do get it might then find themselves unable to view the site. (I can put the workaround URL in, but if they type it in and leave off the slash, they could get stuck).

Fourthly, and lastly, I will at some point be doing a banner ad to advertise Game Night, and asking people if perhaps they can repost it on their blogs, just as I did before Issue 10 of Critical Miss. However, I'm holding fire on that for the moment for two main reasons:

a) to give people a chance to read it - I'm not sure I can expect them to pimp what they haven't read; and

b) to get some good quotes from reviews that I can put on the banner ad.

That's about it...

An Omission Rectified
Just realised that I forgot to mention one very important detail from the Dragonmeet report I posted last Friday, which was that at the charity auction, my good friend [info]boxninja paid a very generous £110 for a Game Night t-shirt and book. (And he'd already bought the book!)

It was very cool, and thank you.

Thanks also to my equally good friend [info]natural20 who, as auctioneer, provided a most generous description of the book.

Game Night Is Now Available From Amazon For Pre-Order
Hi all,

As the title says, you can now go to Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk and pre-order Game Night (the book will become available on Saturday 1st December). When I get a chance I'll update the main Game Night website, but for now, I've knocked up a temporary page which has the two links. (Disclaimer: they're affiliate links, so I get a bit extra from Amazon on what you ordered, at no cost to you):

http://www.criticalmissforums.com/BuyLinks.html

Don't click on the £10.71 link by the way. I'm not sure what the hell that is, and I suspect it's a glitch. Instead, just click on the £7.99 one.

Unless you're at Dragonmeet of course, in which case you can buy the book there. (Or the even more obvious, "But I don't want to buy your book!")

As I'm sure you can all imagine, I'm pretty damn chuffed about this.
