Pictures From The Great Expedition
As you know, two days ago I participated in an expedition to scale Arthur's Seat, and was rewarded by a breathtaking view of the lights of Edinburgh scattered around me. It was wonderful. Now some of the other guys took pictures, and when they put them up I'll point you in their direction. But in the meantime, I'll show my own humble efforts.

It occurs to me that perhaps I ought to get a camera phone with a flash.

yes... what you want is a slow-synchro flash, for a long shutter speed to expose the lights in the background, and the flash for the nearby stuff. A tripod would help too.
Now, in the future, you might want to have each person open their cell phone under their face for illumination. It'll look really weird, but could be cool. Bracing your camera phone against a rock or on the top of a walking stick could help with the slight blur.
Sorry for the day-late-and-pound-short advice...
